How do we screen for risk factors for brain health and mental wellbeing?

Petteri Sveins, CEO

I felt compelled to write a few words about our BitHabit Screening method and how it differs from other screening methods. The reason for the above is that this question is almost always asked of me when I explain new modern methods to our partners or clients.

The essential difference

The key difference is that BitHabit Screening is not based on health claims, but on a person’s own subjective experience of lifestyle. BitHabit does not collect health data and is not a medical device. Often other screening methods are based on health measurements such as blood sugar, blood pressure, body mass index, heart rate or cholesterol levels.

“BitHabit Screening is based on a person’s own subjective experience of lifestyle.”

Screenings can also be carried out by a doctor or health professional. However, it is not enough for us to measure heart rate, because it does not allow us to draw conclusions about, for example, how lonely a person feels or how socially active they are. However, these are particularly important aspects of a person’s well-being.

What we screen and why

The BitHabit Screening covers four areas: mind, movement, self and other. These domains are important for overall health as they relate to brain and memory health, cognition, mental well-being, recovery, physical well-being, life satisfaction, relationships and social activity. Many screening methods often focus on only one or a few domains, or may be too general or non-specific.

Get immediate feedback

The BitHabit Screening is quick and easy to complete online and provides instant personalised written feedback. The feedback includes an index of the different domains and can also serve as a mini-intervention, i.e. it can encourage a healthier lifestyle. Other screening methods can be difficult or time-consuming to use, or may receive delayed or no feedback.

“Feedback also acts as a mini-intervention.”

Other screening methods can also be passive or negative, they can only tell you about risk factors or diseases, but not offer solutions or support. Based on the screening result, we can also provide people with a tool, the BitHabit app, to maintain and promote well-being and health.
